Species Eastern Wild Turkey
Firearm/Bow Browning Gold 10 gauge
Location Neshannock Township, PA
Date 4/28/2012
Details:
After hearing gobbles on the roost and then silence, Jeff patiently waited and called in two jakes, killing this one with a 30-yard shot at 8 a.m. on Pennsylvania's opening morning. Jeff has found quite the honey hole--a young hunter he mentors killed his first bird in the same spot during last year's youth hunt.
Hunter's Name Paul Arnhold and Kevin Howard
Hometown Olathe, KS (Paul) & Elsberry, MO (Kevin)
Species Eastern Wild Turkey
Firearm/Bow Winchester SX3 12 gauge
Location Shelby County, MO
Date 4/16/2012
Details:
Paul Arnhold (left), public relations manager for Bushnell, and Kevin Howard, president of Howard Communications, pulled off this double on opening day of the 2012 Missouri spring turkey season. "We located some turkeys about 7:30 a.m. and worked for the next three hours to get in position to call," Kevin reports. "Paul was to be the shooter and I had him positioned to shoot in the direction of the decoys. I laid my shotgun behind us because I was not planning to shoot. We called in some hens and jakes and then three gobblers showed up to our left, and one came strutting in to the decoys. Paul tipped the strutting bird over and the other two jumped but did not leave. I grabbed Paul's gun and shot a second bird. The third bird stood around until we got up to go see our birds." The Winchester Repeating Arms SX3 12 gauge turkey gun the pair used was topped with a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot scope. Way to go Paul and Kevin!
Hunter's Name Ed Cartier
Hometown Belford, NJ
Species Mountain Lion
Firearm/Bow Winchester Model 94
Location NRA Whittington Center
Date 3/21/2012
Details:
"Following a totally unexpected blizzard, we headed off at 5 a.m. to the backside of the NRA Whittington Center near Raton, N.M. Two hours later my guide found a track and we took the dogs up to the area. Half an hour later the cat was treed. Following a thankfully short hike up the mountain, we located the lion. My guide radioed for the outfitter, who showed up a few minutes later. He confirmed that it was a mature lion, and one of the biggest females he’d ever seen. The open sights on my Winchester 94 (pre-64, of course) were perfect for the close range shot. The lion was facing me and was very low on a supporting branch, so I had a minimal target to shoot at. The 150-grain Silvertip transected the cat’s right lung and it tumbled out of the tree, only to run 50 feet before dying. The pictures tell the rest of the story."
